"If there IS a 'secret'
to success, it's in knowing that we do not achieve success
-- other people GIVE it to us in return for what we have given
them."
This comment was made sometime
back by Linda Carroll on Anthony Blake's Entrepreneurial Success
forum. I was quite impressed with what she said. It's a bit
of a twist on the idea that you get what you want by giving
others what they want. But to me, this is even more powerful.
Think about it. Other people GIVE us our success. It's not something that we obtain
strictly on our own. It's based on what we do for them.
If you just "sell a product,"
are you giving anything to your customers? Not really. You've
merely made an exchange of merchandise for money. But what
if you were to offer some suggestions or advice on how to
best use the product? Or maybe reinforced the customer's decision
by repeating some positive comments made by others about the
product? What happens then? The customer walks away feeling
that you have given them something -- not just sold
a product.
When you perform a service for
someone, you can just "do the job" -- or you can give them
the very best of yourself. If you're a carpet cleaner, you
can just clean the carpet, or you can give your customer hints
on what to use on certain spills and stains. If you're a veterinarian,
you can just euthanize a family pet, or you can follow up
with a sympathy card.
In other words, success is the
reward we receive from giving to others. And it relates
to everything we do in life, not just our business dealings.
I encourage you to think about this statement ... memorize
it ... and put it into practice in your everyday actions.
