It never ceases to amaze me that there are still
people who believe that all they need to do is write an E-book
and poof! They're going to become rich and famous overnight.
The ease of publishing on the Internet has brought
scores of would-be authors out of the woodwork. Because so
much has been written about the fact that the Internet is
information driven, individuals think that all they need to
do is pen a few words about a topic they 'think' they know
about, put it in electronic book format, sign up for a free
web page, write a looooong sales letter extolling the qualities
of their creation, and then sit back and wait for the orders
to start rolling in.
There's no denying that a few E-books are selling
well and probably adding a few bucks to the author's bank
account. But there's a reason for this. In many cases, it's
because the authors have already established themselves in
their particular field. They are well-known in their "circles,"
and have demonstrated their expertise. Because of this, prospective
buyers feel confident they are going to gain new and valuable
information from the E-book.
Another reason is because the books are generally
well-written. Either by using natural talents or by recruiting
the assistance of others, the authors make sure the E-books
are clear and easy-to-read. They take extreme efforts to ensure
the spelling and punctuation are correct. They put the book
in the most effective format. In other words, they apply the
same standards as they would if the book were to be distributed
in print format.
And probably the most important reason is they
consistently and constantly market their E-books. They send
out e-mails to their opt-in list (this is vastly different
from spamming), they may devote a page to their website about
their book, they participate in forums (or develop their own)
and promote their book, they may offer an affiliate program
so others will "help" them sell, and/or they may
invite individuals to form a joint venture.
So if you're considering writing an E-book,
approach the project with the same professionalism as you
would any other type of business. Don't get swept up in the
hype that's so prevalent on the Internet today. Success in
any venture comes only through time, effort, and persistence.
