We all love to get free things. In fact, the
word FREE has been said to be the most attention-grabbing
word in marketing. On Google alone, approximately 1,640,000,000 (yes, that's billions) websites use the word "Free"
somewhere in their website.
Getting something for nothing is hard to resist.
But let's look at this subject from the independent
business owner's side of the picture. It's true that giving
away sample products can often sway a 'borderline' customer
to make a purchase. And giving away free services is a great
way to make people aware of your skills and abilities (especially
when you're just starting out).
But the drawback is that some people place no
value on what they get for free. As a result, they have
no appreciation for what they've received. They take the free
item and you never hear or see from them again (not even a
Thank You!). Of course, these are the risks you face in offering
products or services without charge.
Nonetheless, business owners need to be prudent
about what they give away. In other words, don't give away
the farm! Give away just enough to introduce your product
or service. Make sure that your sample tantalizes, intrigues,
arouses curiosity, whets the tastebuds, coaxes, and attracts.
Whenever possible, follow up with the potential
customer. Ask them their opinion of your service or product.
Find out if they have any suggestions for improvements. Most
people enjoy giving feedback and it provides you a means of
maintaining contact and keeping your company fresh in the
consumer's memory.
